Designed for high school courses and a 10th-grade curriculum, the English Salon will focus on integrated skill development for English.

Each lesson has creative ways for tenth graders to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking in discussions and interactive games that are fun and engaging. In addition, teachers provide game buzzers for groups and prizes for students. 

Lesson Format

Three English teachers will collaboratively teach the English Salon activities and use the following format for each session:

  1. Presentation (Theme, Vocabulary) 15 minutes
  2. Discussion (Practicing Vocabulary and Statements) 20 minutes
  3. Game/ Quiz (Facilitated in Groups using Vocabulary and Statements) 20 minutes
  4. Closing Activity (Formative Assessment) 10 minutes
  5. Lesson Evaluation (Written) 10 minutes
Student Evaluation

Students complete a written evaluation at the end of each lesson in their groups with the following questions:

  • What was your favorite part of the lesson?
  • What English skills do you want to practice next lesson?
  • Who is one person you will invite to our next English Salon?

In groups, students discuss their travel experiences. Where did you go, what did you see, what was the memory?

Lesson Plan Six

Presentation (Theme, Vocabulary) 15 minutes

Each teacher will prepare a presentation about a travel itinerary and relevant target vocabulary. In addition, statistics about the costs and expenses associated with travel to different destinations are presented to students.

Discussion (Practicing Vocabulary and Statements) 20 minutes

In groups, students work through a worksheet to develop their travel itinerary to a destination of their choice. They are provided with travel destination options to consider. Each group has $10,000.00 in Monopoly money to spend on their travel itinerary. The groups will write their travel brochure for their chosen destination and include an itinerary for Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 activities, airfare, hotel expenses, and associated expenses. Each group will present their travel brochure, poster, and itinerary to the class.
